The final format that can be converted with the Open as Adobe PDF command is text files. These file types must be saved as ASCII text either with or without control brakes and other formatting acceptable to the text only format. Word processor files originating from programs, such as Microsoft Word, and saved as an application format cannot be converted through the Open as Adobe PDF command. As ASCII text, most of the document formatting will be lost. If you have a PostScript file and want to convert it to a PDF, even though the PostScript file is ASCII text, it cannot be converted without some editing. Acrobat will read the first line of text in the PostScript file and interpret the instruction as opposed to text only. The first line of PostScript files are generally a comment line, but Acrobat won t ignore the comment and will produce an error when these files are opened with the Open as Adobe PDF command. A warning dialog box appears, as shown in Figure 4-9. In the dialog box, you find a button to enable copying the text to the clipboard. If you click this button, only the text up to the error is copied. The remaining text in the document won t be copied to the clipboard. In the case of PostScript files, only the first line will be copied.
